Olwyn Hughes, a Ballinrobe native who now resides in Roscommon, joined the Board of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation in May 2023, and has since felt incredibly honoured to be part of such a meaningful organisation.

Olwyn started her career in the Irish Defence Forces, where she took up a Cadetship at 18 and served as an army officer for 21 years. She now serves as the Global People Director at Concern Worldwide. Despite her demanding role, Olwyn continues to make time for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation.

“I have always admired the great work being done by the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation and feel truly honoured to be on the Board of the Foundation. When I met with Martina Jennings, our CEO, I was so incredibly inspired by her leadership, her vision, and the extraordinary work she and the staff and volunteers do. From that moment, I knew it would be an incredibly rewarding experience, and I was delighted to get involved. It’s a privilege to support our CEO, Martina Jennings, and the incredible team who deliver critical services with dedication, passion, and professionalism,” Olwyn said.

“Before I joined the board, I had just lost the most wonderful friend in the world, Dr. Attracta Foley Moore, tragically to breast cancer. Being on the Board is my way of dedicating myself to her memory, and I feel it keeps me close to her,” Olwyn added. In more recent times, Olwyn’s personal experience with cancer has deepened her commitment to the Foundation’s work. “Our eldest daughter, Andrea, was diagnosed with a type of blood cancer. Thankfully, we are so incredibly lucky and grateful that she has successfully completed her treatment and is recovering well. My personal experience has made me more determined than ever to pay forward the kindness and support that my family received. Every day spent with my colleagues on the Board, and with Martina and her team, is a great day.”
