History

Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation

In 1992, thanks to the foresight and dedication of a small group of people, the Foundation was established. It was formed as a charitable organisation to help raise funds for Hospice/Palliative Care Services in Mayo and Roscommon. Before the Foundation was established, there were no specialist palliative care services for patients with life-limiting illnesses in these counties.

The Foundation agreed to work in association with the Western Health Board (now HSE West) to meet Service needs and cover an area of 3,143 sq. miles.

Furthermore, the Foundation, with the loyal support of the public, continues to fund the service in association with HSE West. Each year, we fund approximately 50% of the existing Service costs. We also fund the cost of building two Hospice units: a 14-bed unit in Mayo and an 8-bed unit in Roscommon. Both our Mayo Hospice and our Roscommon Hospice are now open to patients. The cost of both Hospices was over €15m, all coming from fundraised income. Therefore, with your support, and the support of the people, we will continue to fund, provide, and develop palliative care services. These will be within the Hospices and our communities, in partnership with the HSE.
