The Nephin Begers Annual Night Hike began as a heartfelt tribute to two much-loved local women, Claire Chambers, who passed away in January 2018, and Eileen Merritt, who passed away in October 2016 after their courageous journeys with cancer.
In their memory, John (Claire’s husband) and Daughters Niamh & Claire and Sons Sean and Conor together with Eileen’s Husband Charlie, son Cathal and daughter Kelly and members of the Nephin Begers hiking group, came together with an idea to honour their loved ones while supporting others facing similar journeys. They decided to organise a memorial hike on Buckagh Mountain, outside Newport, and chose to hold it at night, creating a unique and reflective experience for participants. The first hike took place in March 2019, with all funds raised going to Mayo Roscommon Hospice.
The inaugural event received tremendous support from the local community and beyond, raising over €32,000, with donations arriving from as far away as America.
Like many community events, the hike was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it returned in 2023 and has continued to grow ever since. Since its revival, participants have raised a further €34,800 for Mayo Roscommon Hospice, including an impressive €12,100 raised during the 2026 hike, which took place on 28 March.
Today, the Night Hike attracts more than 50 walkers each year. What makes it particularly special is the atmosphere created by walking under the night sky. It has evolved into more than a fundraising event; it is a time for remembrance, reflection and hope. Participants take the opportunity to think of those currently living with cancer, while remembering the family members, friends and neighbours they have lost.
The Nephin Begers are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported the event over the years, particularly Michael, Mary and Jade O’Haire of O’Haire Travel, who have generously provided transport free of charge since the first hike, as well as the local landowners and volunteers who help prepare and make the route safe each year.
Through the dedication of the Nephin Begers and the generosity of supporters, the Annual Night Hike has become a powerful community tradition, celebrating lives remembered while helping Mayo Roscommon Hospice continue to provide vital care and support to families across the region.
Total funds raised to date: over €66,800 This is a remarkable legacy born from friendship, remembrance and community spirit.
