Meet Joanne Hynes, Board Member at the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation ![]()
Joanne Hynes is a long-serving Board Member with the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, whose 13-year involvement she describes as “good for the soul.” A respected pharmacist in Ballinrobe, Joanne served as Chairperson from 2017 to 2020 and continues to bring deep compassion and leadership to the organisation.
Medicine runs in the family for Joanne. Her father was a local vet, and her grandfather was Ballinrobe’s GP. Joanne opened her own pharmacy in the town 29 years ago, building a trusted business rooted in care for her customers and community.
Shortly after opening her pharmacy, Joanne’s husband John was diagnosed with cancer. During this difficult time, she witnessed first-hand the value of palliative care. John sadly passed away when their daughters were just three and five years old. Both girls went on to follow in their mother’s footsteps and qualified as pharmacists. Joanne later met and married her husband Brian, and they have two teenage children together.
It was the late Castlerea pharmacist John Tully, one of the original founders of Mayo Roscommon Hospice, who encouraged Joanne to get involved. She accepted wholeheartedly – and has never looked back
